Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886); after Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828)
Oil on canvas, circa 1835
New-York Historical Society
Gift of the New-York Gallery of Fine Arts
Author of the Declaration of Independence, first Secretary of State and third President, Jefferson was Hamilton's colleague, nemesis and survivor. Hamilton worked with him, fought him, and backed him for President over Aaron Burr in 1800. This painting is a copy of an 1805 portrait of Jefferson at the pinnacle of success, before the disasters of his second presidential term have fallen on him.
