New York New Jersey

When the orphaned Hamilton first came to the northern colonies, he lived and studied in New Jersey. Later he fought in significant battles during the Revolution, came to General Washington's attention, and met his wife, Elizabeth Hamilton, in New Jersey. Most fateful of all, Hamilton and Aaron Burr fought their deadly duel in New Jersey on July 11, 1804.

Hamilton went to college and joined the militia in New York City, and returned there to practice law after the war. He became the first Treasury Secretary when the federal government was based in New York, and took up his legal career there when he resigned his Cabinet post. And he died at a friend's home in Greenwich Village on July 12, 1804.
